چکیده

This paper makes use of a probabilistic model, that predicts the likelihood of crashes (crash potential) on freeways on the basis of traffic flow conditions, in real-time crash prevention. The model was developed using incident logs and loop detector data collected over a 13-month period on the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto. The previous work suggested that an increase in levels of traffic turbulence generally yields high crash potential. Traffic turbulence was defined in terms of a series of crash precursors which represent traffic conditions that were present prior to crash occurrence. To apply the model in crash prevention, the link needs to be established between crash potential and real-time safety intervention. The objective of this paper is to explore this link for different thresholds of crash potential. The paper discusses the guidelines for evaluating the safety benefit of one crash prevention strategy (variable speed limits) and suggests the risk-based evaluation framework for real-time traffic control.

Proactive Real-time Traffic Safety Implementation Strategy on Freeways

Reactive traffic management strategies such as incident detection are becoming less relevant with the advancement of mobile phone usage. Freeway management in the 21 century needs to shift focus toward proactive strategies that include anticipating incidents such as the crashes. Predicting crash occurrences would also be the key to traffic safety. A two-step approach to identify freeway locatio...

A Freeway Safety Strategy for Advanced Proactive Traffic Management

Reactive traffic management strategies such as incident detection are becoming less relevant with the advancement of mobile phone usage. Freeway management in the 21st century needs to shift focus toward proactive strategies that include anticipating incidents such as crashes. Quantifying effects of ramp metering on freeway safety.

This study presents a real-time crash prediction model and uses this model to investigate the effect of the local traffic-responsive ramp metering strategy on freeway safety. Safety benefits of ramp metering are quantified in terms of the reduced crash potential estimated by the real-time crash prediction model. Driver responses to ramp metering and the consequent traffic flow changes were obse...

Application of data mining techniques for real-time crash risk assessment on freeways

Data mining is the analysis of large "observational" datasets to find unsuspected relationships that might be useful to the data owner. It typically involves analysis where objectives of the mining exercise have no bearing on the data collection strategy. Freeway traffic surveillance data collected through underground loop detectors is one such "observational" database maintained for various IT...

The viability of real-time prediction and prevention of traffic accidents

This paper addresses a novel idea of real-time traffic safety improvement on freeways. First by predicting traffic crashes on the freeway mainline using on-line loop detector data, then by proposing ITS remediation strategies to reduce the crash risk in real-time. The results of the predictive models were found to be consistent with the probable mechanisms of crashes under different flow regime...
